Duties & Responsibilities
The Emergency Services Department provides for activities related to saving lives and property from natural, and man-made emergencies. This department also provides for direction and coordination of public safety related programs including the direction of Emergency Management activities, management and operation of the countywide Enhanced 9-1-1 system, and administration and coordination of countywide Paramedic level Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
The Emergency Management Agency's purpose is to reduce the vulnerabilities of people and property to natural and man-made emergencies and disasters, and to establish capabilities to respond effectively to such occurrences; to ensure individuals that have been affected by a major disaster have the proper relief and recovery assistance; and to educate the public on the four phases of Emergency Management (mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery).
The Emergency Medical Services Agency is responsible for providing Emergency Medical Services to all citizens of Halifax County, when emergencies occur. This office oversees all emergency medical activities within the County. The goal of emergency medical services in Halifax County is to provide all citizens of the County with paramedic level.
Facility Features
The Central Communications Center is Halifax County's only Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). It provides 24-hour telecommunications operations for receiving and dispatching requests from the public and other agencies for County and Municipal fire services, emergency medical services and law-enforcement responses. It also has the ability to communicate with non-emergency responders in both County and Municipal departments. It serves as the County warning point and receives all severe weather watches and warnings and other emergency communications for dissemination to appropriate officials and departments. It is co-located with the Halifax County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and provides communications support when the EOC is activated.
