Register of Deeds Register of Deeds Index Search

The Register of Deeds Office is a county government office responsible for the recording, indexing and preservation of all real estate records, vital records, UCC's, plats and other miscellaneous records. The Register of Deeds is an elected position with a four-year term. The staff consists of an assistant and four deputies. We provide numerous services to the working community and general public and are committed to serving our customers in a efficient and professional manner. Our operating hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

The Halifax County Register of Deeds Office has real estate records dating back to 1732. Marriage records are available since 1825. Birth and death records are available since October of 1913. All records can be searched through hard-copy indexes. Also, if you go to Register of Deeds Index Search you can access real property indexes and images of records from 1976 to present:  Survey maps are available on-line since 2007 and the rest of the maps will be scanned in the near future.

Certified copies of birth, death and marriage records are issued for a fee of $10.00 each. Laminated wallet size certificates are available for births and marriages for a fee of $10.00 each. Valid picture ID or Driver's License is required to obtain a certified copy of vital records. These records can be obtained by coming into the Register of Deeds Office or by requesting it through the mail. If you come in for the certificate, you will be helped by a staff member and receive it in a few minutes. Mail-in requests are answered on a daily basis. Vital records must be paid for in cash or money order - no personal checks are accepted.

This office is responsible for issuing marriage licenses for couples who plan to get married in North Carolina. Valid picture ID or Driver's License and Social Security card are required. Individuals who are 21 years of age or younger must also furnish a certified copy of their birth certificate. There are certain requirements for individuals under the age of 18. Also, if previously married, proof of last marriage ended is required. The fee for a marriage license is $50.00 - cash or money order.
