The Legal Department, consisting of the County Attorney and a Certified Paralegal, provides legal representation to the Board of Commissioners as well as to the County Manager and to all the Departments supervised by the County Manager, to the Sheriff, and to the Department of Health. This representation consists of legal opinions to the Board of Commissioners on substantive and procedural issues pertaining to their public duties as elected officials. Furthermore, the representation extends to the County Manager in order to ensure the legality of the County's contracts, financing arrangements, employment policies, etc.; to defend the County in the courts; and to conduct tax foreclosures. Finally, the representation embraces various legal questions presented by the Department Heads, Sheriff, and Director of Health.
The County Attorney's Office only represents Halifax County, its agencies, officials and employees, on matters of public business, and does not provide legal advice to citizens on private matters.
HALIFAX COUNTY TAX FORECLOSURES
Notices will be posted on this website for all tax foreclosure sales that have been scheduled. A picture will be posted if available. All sales will be held at the usual place designated for public sales in the lower lobby of the Halifax County Courthouse in Halifax, North Carolina. All interested persons should be present on the date and time specified in the notice in order to bid on a particular property. All bids are subject to a 10- day upset bid period. All properties will be sold "as is". Absolutely no warranties of title or conditions on the property are made by either the county or the commissioner of the sale. All sales are subject to the outstanding taxes, assessments, liens or other interest of any party not specifically named as a Defendant or Defendant Lienholder in the tax foreclosure proceedings. Persons bidding on property should consider having a title examination done prior to bidding. Failure to do so will not be deemed sufficient to be released from a bid.
